Rome - Another Day, Another Gellato Flavor

Image
Rome was a very enchanting city. With quite a history, there was lots to see and do, and by the third day of exploring the city, we were pooped. To start from the beginning, we departed Florence in the afternoon, and enjoyed the short trip to Rome. We got to see a bit more of the Italian countryside, which looks a lot like southern California. It is covered with red tile buildings, vineyards, and olive groves though, with of course, the occasional castle. No more mountains though...we left those in northern Italy. That night, we had arranged to stay in a small private bed and breakfast. The owner was late though, so Laura ran out for some pizza and coke. Turned out to be some of the best pizza of the trip. No tomato sauce, just cheese spinach, sausage and dough. So good though. Eric caught up with the bed and breakfast owner, and we were led inside to a place with marble floors and antique furnishings. They provided Espresso every morning and croissants, but no internet. There was a re

Florence - Capital of the Renaissance

Wow is all we can say. What a town. It has quite a preserved Renaissance flavor, with small winding streets and centuries old buildings to each side. There are dozens of art galleries, and wonderful museums and palaces, not to mention churches on every corner, ruins of an old town wall, and magnificent views of the Arno river from the many bridges. There was so much to see here, and we had a very full two days. This is going to be a long posting, so hang in there! We arrived in Florence on the night of May 14th, at about 9:30. We couldn’t seem to find the stop for the bus to take to our lodgings for the night. After the bus rolled by, we chased after it, backpacks and all, only to realize once we reached it that the driver was taking a break. 20 minutes later, we were off and on our way to Campaggino Michelangelo, our lodging for our time in Florenzia, which happened to be a way cool campground. The place was located near Piazza Michelangelo, up on a hill and across the Arno river from

Milano, where all of Laura's dreams came true!

The day after Fussen, we were in for a LONG long train ride to Milan, Italy (2 hours from Fussen to Munich, 8 hours from Munich to Milan). So we got a few good books, and charged up our camera batteries. The good part about this day is that we would be riding through the Austrian Alps almost the entire way. We would get a huge sightseeing trip for the low low price of 2 train tickets, which we wanted anyway. We took some pictures from the train windows of both all the small towns, mountains, and hilltop castles in Germany and Austria. Surprisingly, once we got into Italy, there were vineyards everywhere, as well as small hilltop towns, with old city walls surrounding them. Laura at the BK Lounge (Burger King), getting ready for the long train trip. Can anyone say, "Free Wifi?" Eric relaxing on the train trip with a good book and final bottle of german beer.
