AmsterDAM
For our religious blog followers, I must apoligize for the lack of posts in the last few days. You see our time in Amsterdam was almost internet free, and seeing how we did not want to spend 5 euro an hour to post a blog that takes 2 hours to load a picture, here we are now!
I suppose we should start at the begining. We scoured the internet before leaving on our honeymoon, so we could have our bookings done all the way through Amsterdam. So after much research, looking for a place online that would provide us with good times in the DAM city, but also a nice place to share in our newlywedded bliss and share some romantic times in the land of tulips. So, to make a long story short, Laura booked a Hotel on Orbitz, or some other US booking website, thinking she had found a gem (for the price and so called location). Well it was a gem! Located in the heart of the Red Light District!
Honestly, it took us about 2 days to figure out where we were actually staying. Two events prompted this realization, first, after touring the city, we decided to take a different route back to our hotel, only to find that one street over there were the famed women of the window. Secondly, when we asked the front desk guy about it, he smiled and said, "Aye, your right in the heart of it, the only place where men like to window shop as much as woman." which recieved a "We are on our honeymoon" from Laura, and a disapproving look.
Despite our revelation, we throughly enjoyed our hotel. We came up with the theory that the hotel was an old sailors tavern place. (We had the 'Honeymooners Suite' the one room in the hotel that had a double bed). The room was awesome with a view over the canal and of an old church that played lovely chimes every 15 minutes, music for all Red Light district folk! We also saw the Dam place, apparently the big town square where everything goes down, the Van Gogh Museum, and Anne Frank's House. All were right next to our hotel, and there was a big carnival at the Dam Place. It seems the Dutch "call them as they see them," if you will. So it seems all the streets and buisnesses near the Dam Place were "Dammed" with the name, haha.
We had a blast in Amsterdam and actually managed to get to the Hague one day, to get a visa for Vietnam! While we were there, we also wandered around all of the embassies, visted the Indian embassy, and dropped into the Mauritshuis Museum, and saw a number of Flemish works, including many Rembrants, and Vermeer's Girl with the Pearl Earing. Although it was raining, we were able to make the best of the Hague.
