Getting Closer

Wow,

Its almost christmas now, and the trip is getting close. We are starting to really knuckle down on the planning and mentally preparing ourselves for the big trip. Time is really flying by!

Kom-Ombo and Edfu - Ancient Egypt along the Nile

Laura and Eric at the Kom-Ombo Temple We were dropped off from the Felluca at about 9 AM, and headed toward Luxor in a van. Along the way, we made two stops, one at Kom-Ombo Temple and one at Edfu Temple. These two temples were great, and built in the same style as the Philae Temple in Aswan. It is really neat to see and learn about each one, the gods worshiped there and to see the intricate reliefs and statues. The Kom-Ombo Temple was actually a duel temple, between Sobek, the crocodile god, and Hathor, goddess of music and love. Back in the day, they actually had sacred crocodiles lounging on the bank by the temple! This dual temple was cool, because it was symmetric down the middle to make everything even, but at the same time, everything was doubled, so there were two inner sanctums, and two doors to each courtyard, etc. Laura in front of a column at the Kom-Ombo temple. Cairo

We spent the next three days hanging out in Cairo, relaxing after our big tour and preparing for India. We had a few nice meals, caught up on some business, and recouped some of our strength. The culture here in Egypt is very different. Nowhere is this more pronounced than in Islamic Cairo, where we walked around one day. Islamic Cairo is filled with Mosques from the 900’s, and lot of buildings from the Mameluke period (1500’s) which is beautiful in its own right. We went into a mausoleum and the Al-Azhar mosque, but mostly just toured around the neighborhood a bit, looking at the different shops and traditional crafts being made. Just about every woman in Cairo is covered head to toe, with only their face showing. Some are dressed all in black, and even have their faces covered with only eye holes, or a thin black cloth covering their entire face, so that even their eyes cannot be seen. Nuweiba, Egypt - Paradise on Earth

We crossed the Red Sea into Egypt on June 20 th via ferry. Leaving Jordan required some bureaucracy, paperwork and fees, of course, but we got all that figured out and were happily on our way. The boat was nice and comfy. And we got to start our Egypt paperwork for visas while on the boat. We met a few other westerners on board (7 to be exact) and shared stories about traveling and cool places we had been and played some cards. The most interesting time was looking off the balcony, and being able to see Egypt, Jordan, Israel, and Saudi Arabia, all at the same time. We got a great video of that one. Nuweiba is a small town in the Southern Sinai coast, on the gulf of Aquaba. Basically, its an hours drive north of Dahab, or about 3 hours north of Sharm el Sheik. (maybe a map is necessary here…) Anyway, the Ferry stops here, so we booked a hotel about 5 miles north of town in a place called “Tarabine Beach.” On the internet, the place looked nice, but it turned out to be...
